Travel Vaccinations
Your risk of becoming ill when traveling depends, in part, on the areas to be visited, the length of stay, and your style of travel. In some cases, international tourist destinations are in highly developed areas where you should observe health precautions similar to those in the United States. However, because of differences in living standards and sanitary conditions, food and water safety, and immunization coverage, your risk of illness is higher if you are traveling in developing countries and rural areas.
In addition to the routine adult immunizations you may need additional vaccines including:
Japanese Encephalitis
Rabies
Typhoid
Yellow Fever
Plan ahead! Some vaccinations are given in a 2-3 shot series over a period of time. It takes 14 to 30 days from the time of the immunization for some antibody production to take place. Certain vaccines for different diseases should be administered 4 weeks apart.
Visit the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention web site at http://www.cdc.gov/Features/SpringTravel/ for additional travel vaccination guidance and recommendations.

Why do Adults Need Vaccinations?
Some adults incorrectly assume that the vaccines they received as children will protect them for the rest of their lives. Generally this is true, except that:
Some adults were never vaccinated as children
Newer vaccines were not available when some adults were children
Immunity can begin to fade over time
As we age, we become more susceptible to serious disease caused by common infections (e.g., flu, pneumococcus)
Click HERE to visit the CDC web site to learn about each disease. It includes a short description, symptoms, complications, transmission, and whether or not you need the vaccine as an adult.
